Chiefs Reunite with WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement on a new contract with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, signaling his return to the team where he previously enjoyed a successful stint. This move comes as the Chiefs look to bolster their receiving corps for the upcoming NFL season.

JuJu Smith-Schuster's Return to the Chiefs

JuJu Smith-Schuster, who was a key offensive weapon for the Chiefs during their 2022 Super Bowl championship campaign, is back in Kansas City. On Monday, Smith-Schuster was seen in uniform and actively participating in practice sessions with the team. His return is anticipated to bring valuable experience and playmaking ability to the Chiefs’ receiving group.

During his sole season with the Chiefs in 2022, Smith-Schuster was a significant contributor, catching 78 passes for 933 yards. His performance was instrumental in the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory. Following that successful season, Smith-Schuster entered free agency and signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the New England Patriots. This deal was part of the Patriots' efforts under former head coach Bill Belichick to revamp their roster.

JuJu Smith-Schuster's Stint with the Patriots

Smith-Schuster's time with the Patriots was less impactful than his previous season with the Chiefs. Over the course of one season with New England, he managed to record 29 receptions for 260 yards and one touchdown across 11 games. Despite these contributions, the Patriots released him earlier this month. His release from the Patriots opened the door for his return to Kansas City.

Career Highlights and Past Achievements

Before joining the Chiefs, JuJu Smith-Schuster spent his first five NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His tenure with the Steelers included standout performances, with his best season occurring in 2018. During that year, Smith-Schuster caught 111 passes for a remarkable 1,426 yards. He also had a strong showing in 2020 with 97 receptions. Smith-Schuster’s dynamic playmaking abilities and consistent performances have established him as a formidable receiver in the league.

Chiefs' Receiving Corps Update

In addition to re-signing Smith-Schuster, the Chiefs have made other notable additions to their receiving corps this offseason. They brought in veteran free agent Marquise Brown and selected wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the first round of the draft. However, the status of Brown is currently uncertain due to a dislocated shoulder sustained during the preseason opener. His availability for the regular season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5 remains in question.

As the Chiefs prepare for the new season, the addition of JuJu Smith-Schuster is expected to enhance their offensive capabilities and provide a familiar and reliable target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The team's ability to integrate Smith-Schuster into their offensive scheme could play a crucial role in their quest for another successful season.
