Packers Acquire QB Malik Willis in Trade with Titans

In a recent move, the Green Bay Packers have traded a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans for quarterback Malik Willis, sources confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This trade marks a significant shift in the Packers' quarterback strategy as they look to bolster their backup position behind Jordan Love.

Packers' New Quarterback Strategy

Following the Packers' preseason finale, coach Matt LaFleur hinted that the team might seek a new backup quarterback. On Monday, the team confirmed the acquisition of Malik Willis, who is expected to back up Jordan Love this season. The decision comes after a summer competition between second-year pro Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt, neither of whom managed to secure the backup role convincingly.

"There were some really good moments and then there were some things we absolutely have to do better," LaFleur said. The Packers' evaluation led to the decision to trade for Willis, who will likely be a better fit as the No. 2 quarterback compared to Clifford or Pratt.

Willis' Role and the Titans' Quarterback Depth

Malik Willis, who was previously the No. 3 quarterback for the Titans behind starter Will Levis and backup Mason Rudolph, was traded due to a numbers game with the Titans' roster. The team faced challenges keeping three quarterbacks and opted to prioritize other positions, making Willis expendable.

Willis had been working mostly with the third team during training camp but had shown improvement under new coach Brian Callahan. With the Packers investing heavily in Jordan Love, the addition of Willis aims to provide a more reliable backup option. The Packers' decision to acquire Willis comes as they prepare for the season opener against the Eagles.

Packers' Roster Adjustments

With the addition of Willis, the Packers may need to make further roster adjustments. Clifford is "likely gone," according to sources, suggesting he might be released in the upcoming roster cutdown. Pratt could potentially remain on the roster or join the practice squad, where he might be elevated for game days.

Additional Context

The Packers' decision reflects their commitment to ensuring a stable backup situation behind Love, who signed a four-year, $220 million contract early in training camp. Willis' arrival could provide the team with a more experienced option if Love faces any setbacks during the season.
