Investors Valuing OpenAI at Over $100 Billion on the Secondaries Market

OpenAI's Skyrocketing Valuation: What You Need to Know

OpenAI is currently in negotiations for a new funding round with a staggering valuation exceeding $100 billion, according to sources reported by The Wall Street Journal. This impressive valuation reflects the high demand and confidence investors have in OpenAI’s future prospects.

Current Valuation Insights

Recent secondary market activity reveals that investors are willing to pay prices that suggest a valuation of over $100 billion for OpenAI. Secondary market transactions, where shares are bought from existing investors rather than the company itself, have shown significant investor interest.

Details of the Potential Funding Round

The primary funding round OpenAI is negotiating would likely be led by Thrive Capital, with Josh Kushner’s firm reportedly set to invest $1 billion. Other potential investors include major tech giants such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple. This move marks a substantial increase from OpenAI’s previous valuation of $86 billion during a secondary sale last September.

Market Activity and Future Projections

Rainmaker Securities has reported that investors are bidding on OpenAI stock at valuations reaching up to $143 billion. Caplight, a secondary market data tracker, estimates that OpenAI’s current worth exceeds $111 billion based on recent secondary market activity and previous financing rounds.

Glen Anderson, co-founder and managing partner at Rainmaker Securities, noted the high demand from investors eager to be part of OpenAI’s journey. “A $100 billion valuation might seem steep, but if OpenAI lives up to its potential, it could be considered a bargain,” Anderson commented.

Greg Martin, also a co-founder at Rainmaker Securities, highlighted that while OpenAI’s valuation has surged, its revenue growth has been substantial. The company is on track to reach $2 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) by year-end. Martin acknowledged the difficulty in accurately valuing OpenAI but emphasized the strong demand and potential for future growth, suggesting that the company could eventually be worth a trillion dollars.

Impact on the AI Sector

This funding round is expected to generate significant buzz and influence in the AI sector. Martin anticipates that it will increase secondaries activity and elevate the valuations of other AI companies such as Anthropic, Cohere, and Hugging Face. “This generates excitement and resets market expectations,” Martin said.
