Tragic Loss: NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau and Brother Matthew Die in Bicycle Accident

Johnny Gaudreau, the Columbus Blue Jackets winger known as "Johnny Hockey," and his younger brother Matthew tragically died on Thursday, August 29, 2024. Both brothers were struck by a vehicle while riding their bikes in New Jersey. The driver involved is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Johnny Gaudreau, 31, was a beloved figure in the hockey community, known not only for his extraordinary skills on the ice but also for his warm personality off the ice. He was a standout player at Boston College, winning the Hobey Baker Award as the top men's college hockey player in 2014, and went on to have an illustrious NHL career with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. Over 11 NHL seasons, Gaudreau scored 743 points in 763 games, with his best season in 2021-22 when he tallied 115 points.

Matthew Gaudreau, 29, was also involved in professional hockey, playing in the ECHL, where he last suited up for the Worcester Railers during the 2021-22 season.

The Gaudreau brothers were in New Jersey to attend their sister Katie's wedding, where they were to serve as groomsmen. The news of their untimely deaths has sent shockwaves through the hockey community, with many expressing their sorrow and condolences.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, along with numerous players and teams, have expressed their deep sadness over the loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, emphasizing Johnny's impact both on and off the ice.
